I have this headcanon that Bolin is that friend who gives really great hugs. And the idea of Borra hugs gives me feels. So… this was born. Enjoy. ATLA wasn’t mine, and neither is LOK.
Bolin is, and always has been, an affectionate person. And one of Korra’s favorite things about him is the way he hugs.
They’re common, but not in a way that cheapens them. In a way that brightens her day, makes them something she’s used to and appreciates, something she doesn’t know if she could function without any more. In a way that makes her reach for them more and more.
Celebratory hugs, full of laughter and giddiness and tight, quick squeezes. They run to each other, and sometimes they spin, and it’s sort of like a chest bump but much more them and wrapped up in excitement and giddiness and just wanting to be close. There’s always the quiet undercurrent of thank you. Thank you for helping me get here.
Comforting hugs, the sad and somber kind, where one offers their arms and the other just collapses into the safehouse, and it’s long and tight and close. Just one long squeeze, sometimes with one or both sobbing, sometimes just with sadness. Where they hold each other up in such a way that allows them both to slouch down, to take the weight of the world off of their shoulders for just a moment. Where they just breathe and squeeze and remind themselves that, no matter what, they’ll never have to do any of it alone.
Greeting hugs, usually short and happy and just one quick embrace, where her arms wrap all around his back and his wrap all around hers and they lean their heads on each other’s shoulders for a moment. Small, involuntary smiles and an unbreakable closeness.
Goodbye hugs, mostly a little bit longer. A lingering to them, not wanting to leave the safe house of the other’s presence, especially not the safety of each other’s arms. A sort of sweet sorrow, eve if it’ll just be short.
And then there are the really goodbye hugs, where they just clamp around each other, looking for some comfort to take with them, where they aren’t entirely sure that they’ll see each other again but they have each other now and they’re both strong and good and if they just believe hard enough then everyone will come back okay. It’s worked so far.
The newest development, however, in the world of their hugs, is one more on Korra’s part then Bolins. Just because hugs. Where they’ll be talking and she’ll just reach over and wrap one arm around him, casually, and draw close to him for a moment before pulling away. Or where he comes up with a good idea or a funny joke and she gives him something very close to a celebratory hug but that usually wouldn’t be there. Or, on occasion, the moment will be still enough and their attention will be shared on something that’s not talking and she’ll just wrap her arms around him, loosely, without actually looking away from whatever they’re watching.
And then, one day, they’re just eating, their mouths very, very briefly too full to talk, and then Korra really looks at him, like she hadn’t seen him there quite like that the whole time, and she puts her sandwich down and actually gets up and walks around the table to hug him. Just to hug him. “Thanks,” she whispers, and when he tries to ask why through his full mouth, she just smiles at him and hugs him a little harder.
For half a second, he feels a warm press against the top of his head, and then she lets go and returns to her seat. “So,” she says, picking her sandwich back up like it never happened, “did I ever tell you about the time I first learned that I could firebend?”
Pairings: Bosami friendship, discussion of Borra/Makorra/Masami drama
Disclaimer: I do not own. And if I told you what would be different were I to own it, I would probably just sound bitter.
A/N: Spoilers for the finale, this was written afterwards, and it is very, very sad in light of said finale. Bolin and Asami just being bros and bonding over shared circumstances, could be read as romantic if you wish. All of the other pairings are just things that they debate in the background, and none of them is really shown in much of a better light than the others. So… despite the title, not really a shippy fic.
There was this meme on DA a long, long time ago that I recently stumbled across, and I thought “Heck, why not. I need to force myself to write a little.” So I did.
Le Rules:
- Pick a character, fandom, pairing, friendship, whatever.
- Put on your music program on shuffle/random and start playing songs.
- For each song, write something inspired by the song related to the theme you chose earlier. You only have the song length. No pre-planning and no writing after the song is over. No skipping songs either.
- Do 10 songs and post. Make sure to include the song name/artist.
I apologize in advanced because these are sloppy and mostly unedited and a lot of them don’t entirely make sense. They would’ve been completely unedited, in the spirit of the challenge, if it weren’t for the fact that I didn’t stop at ten and, when I was looking over them deciding which one(s) not to post (which wound up being none of them), I couldn’t help changing a little bit of the wording. I left in most of the bigger flaws, because, again, spirit of the challenge.
Reblogging here for the sake of keeping all of my tumblr-based writing stuff in one place.
I settle down to write a little Borra fluff because everything I’m working on for the pairing is super crazy big and heavy and I don’t exactly always know where I’m going with it, and this is apparently what happened. I don’t know what I think of it, but I’m posting it here before I can change my mind.
Anywho…
The first time, he was simultaneously thrilled and terrified, and the way he clung to Korra was entirely unmanly, but that never mattered with her. She would see through any of his attempts to be smooth, and they both liked it better when they were open and honest, when they both acted like people instead of some roles they were supposed to be fulfilling. No other girl had ever made him feel like that was okay, and he felt like maybe that was what he had always been missing. Regardless of anything else, Korra was quickly becoming his best friend, and that was a breath of fresh air.
It astonished him how quickly he was able to fall into a rhythm with her, though the use of rare muscles gave him the feeling that he would be a bit sore in the morning. It was like nothing he’d ever done before, and it was incredibly freeing as he began to get into it.
“Faster,” he whispered, high on adrenaline, and Korra obliged happily. Bolin knew that he was smiling like a dope, but Korra was laughing herself, a little adrenaline-drunk herself and also frequently checking over her shoulder to share in the experience with him. A first time could only happen but once, and hers was so far gone she could barely remember it, so she took careful note of the experience through his eyes, remembering as he lived it for the first time.
She turned back around to check, momentarily, and a cabbage cart was fast approaching. She whipped the reigns to make a sharp turn, and Bolin squeeze tighter with a tiny squeak as she did so.
Riding through the city wasn’t the brightest idea, sure, but she was getting the hang of it, and it was worth it to give Bolin the experience.
“You hanging on back there?”
“Korra, this is fantastic!”
“Yeah, Naga’s the best transport you could ask for.”
Bolin’s arms tightened a little, subconsciously, and she got the feeling that that wasn’t entirely what he meant. “It beats walking, that’s for sure.”
